She raised her arm, shaking her finger at me angrily.

“Paul Martin, Jr, will be prime minister. It is ordained!”

“But he is not even involved in politics,” I countered. ” It was his father, Paul Martin Sr. who lost the last election.”

There, in the dimly lit hospital room, my patient insisted that her prediction was correct.

In 1939, when Europe shuddered not knowing what Hitler’s murderous intentions would be, two young Canadian families lived in Switzerland, both husbands working with the World Bank.

Both families had two elementary school aged children. One family was Jewish. Their primary concern was protecting their youngsters.

Without their knowledge, the other family obtained new birth certificates for the Jewish children that enabled them to return to Canada, to safety.

That incredibly kind act cemented the friendship between the Martin and Rasminsky families. And now, more than thirty- five years had passed and my patient was terminally ill.

She loved to chat about politics, especially Paul Martin, both senior and junior.

Once again, my patient stated that Paul Martin Jr. ” will be Prime Minister of Canada”!

And so he was!
